Whether your goal is to compete at a high level, stay active with your kids, or simply live a life free of nagging aches, success in fitness requires a solid foundation.
To help our clients understand how to build that foundation, we utilize a concept known as the Individual's Hierarchy of Needs. This framework acts as a visual representation of the factors that contribute to pain and injury, allowing us to form a unique "functional diagnosis" of your physical capabilities.
Think of your body’s capabilities like a pyramid. Each layer of the Individual's Hierarchy of Needs stands entirely on the strength and integrity of the layer beneath it. The overall size and potential of your pyramid are completely dependent on the size and structure of your base. If you want to develop world-class movement or simply enjoy a highly active lifestyle, you need a large, robust supporting base.
Here are the five critical layers of your fitness pyramid, from the foundational base to the peak:
1. Recovery and Capacity Balance (The Base)
This is the absolute foundation of your pyramid. Your recovery and capacity balance determines whether your lifestyle factors allow you to properly recover from the physical stress of your workouts. Even if you have perfect technique, immense strength, and great flexibility, your tissues will eventually break down if you cannot repair them after stress. This lack of recovery leads to problems like tendinopathy, muscle strains, and joint restrictions. To build a solid base, we evaluate three primary lifestyle factors:
Sleep: Are you getting enough high-quality sleep to produce the hormones necessary for recovery?
Diet: Are you consuming enough water, calories, and nutrients to support your body's metabolic processes?
Stress: Are you living with excessive stress from major life events? All stress affects your nervous system and must be accounted for.
2. Flexibility
Once your recovery is in check, we look at flexibility. Flexibility is defined as the ability of your joints to passively reach a full range of motion, usually with the assistance of gravity or an external force. An example is hanging from a pull-up bar and letting gravity fully open your shoulders. Having specific flexibility is a strict prerequisite for developing mobility, which is why it comes first.
3. Mobility
While flexibility is passive, Mobility is the ability to actively reach a full range of motion using only the force generated by your own muscles. For example, pressing a PVC pipe overhead and using your own strength to bring your arms parallel to your body is a measure of mobility.
4. Strength Balance
It is not enough to simply ask, "Can you move this weight?" We must also ask, "Can your joints distribute and share these forces equally, in all directions?". Strength Balance ensures that your joints can safely produce and absorb force. Imagine multiple people pulling a boat through a canal with ropes; if one person pulls much harder than the others, the boat goes off course and crashes. Similarly, if you are significantly stronger in your pushing muscles than your pulling muscles, your joints experience altered stresses. This leads to repetitive overloading in some tissues and chronic underloading in others. We always strive to minimize these imbalances.
5. Motor Control & Skill (The Peak)
Consider this the process of taking all the individual parts and making them whole. It isn't enough to just have full range of motion and strength; you have to learn how to sequence your body parts together and feel safe while doing so. Motor control and skill acquisition should be your last line of defense in the gym. We only want to build tolerance to speed, complexity, and endurance once we know all the prerequisites beneath this layer have been met.
Where Does Your Pyramid Stand?
Performance and function over time are completely dependent on managing these five layers. If you are experiencing pain, hitting plateaus, or feeling unsure of where to start, you likely have a crack somewhere in your foundation.
We can help you evaluate exactly what your body needs so you can safely and effectively build your pyramid from the ground up.
